Many areas of the country have been hit by heavy snowfall, resulting in chaos on the roads as drivers lose control of their vehicles.
This is why GoCompare Car Insurance has reminded motorists to be extremely cautious when taking their motors out in icy and snowy conditions – not only to stay safe, but also so they do not invalidate their insurance policies.
While they may not mean to do so, there are many ways drivers can render their insurance cover worthless during snowy weather. These include not clearing snow from the roof of their car when driving; not de-icing or demisting all windows and mirrors; and not driving appropriately on the roads.
Spokesperson for the insurance comparison site Matt Oliver stated: “In most cases, your insurer is unlikely to pay out if you have been driving illegally or recklessly, and if you were to have an accident as a result of not clearing your roof, it could be deemed that you had been irresponsible.”
It is also important to have full visibility when behind the wheel, which is why the entire car has to be de-iced and demisted.
Mr Oliver reminded drivers not to leave their car unattended while warming it up by putting the key in the ignition and waiting in the house. This is because if someone jumped in the car and drove off, the owner would not be able to claim on their insurance policy as the vehicle was unlocked.
This advice is particularly relevant today (January 30th), as Britain was covered in a blanket of snow overnight. Met Office spokesman Alex Burkill told the Daily Mail that the current yellow warning could be raised as more “significant snow” has the potential to arrive over the next few days.
